About Us
PU-Panjab University is one of the renowned university of India, offering a number of courses viz. sciences, Engineering, Humanities, and Social Sciences etc. University also offers research facility in almost all the fields. The Panjab University has a large lush green campus spread over 550 acres in the city of Chandigarh. There are 75 departments and courses taught in 15 centres at the main campus in Chandigarh and in colleges affiliated to the Panjab University in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.
Panjab University was originally established in Lahore (Pakistan) and relocated to Chandigarh in 1956. After independence in 1947, the university does not have a campus for almost a decade. Its office was situated in Solan, Himachal Pradesh with teaching faculties at various places in Punjab and Delhi.
Presently, the Panjab university has 75 departments, 15 centres on the campus and four Regional centers offering the faculties of Arts, Science, languages(both foreign and Indian), law, Design and Fine Arts, business and management and commerce, engineering and technology, Medical Sciences, and Pharmacy. Almost all the departments have their own library.
A.C. Joshi Library is the central library of the university and also the largest of all. It has around 8, 00,000 books and periodicals, of which some are rare collections of 19th century. The university grants commission has recognized it as one of the six national centres for information distribution. Its reading hall is open 24 hours on all working days.
