Established in 1989 by the Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development, The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was started to initiate vocational and professional learning for students in distance learning and open schooling format. Quality and Targeted Learning for people who didn't have access to schools and colleges were the basis of setting up NIOS. The hope that everyone can get quality education wherever he/she might go was something NIOS stands for till date.
