Civil Services Examination Pattern/Scheme The Civil Services Examination has two successive stages - i Preliminary Examination Multiple choice Objective type It is meant for screening candidates for the Main Examination. Those who are declared qualified at this stage appear for the mains examination. The preliminary exam is just for screening candidates, its score is not considered for final merit. The number of candidates admitted to Mains examination is approximately 12-13 times of the total number of vacancies. Paper I It is 200 marks paper and has questions of general studies. Time allowed to complete this paper is 2Hrs. This paper contains questions from various fields like national and international current event news, history, Indian polity, geography, economics and general environmental issues. Paper II This is also 200 marks paper and time allowed is 2 Hrs. This paper aims at testing candidates knowledge of English, Interpersonal skills, reasoning, mental ability and English comprehension etc.
