The Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) is a global initiative that works to increase access to books for people with print disabilities. The ABC was launched in 2014 and has since grown into an international network of organizations working together towards making more books available in accessible formats, such as braille, audio, large-print and digital text.
Having access to books is essential for everyone’s development – it helps us learn new things, gain knowledge and understand different perspectives. Unfortunately, many people with print disabilities are unable to read printed material due to their disability or impairment. This means they miss out on important learning opportunities which can have a negative impact on their quality of life. By providing these individuals with access to books through alternative formats like braille or audio recordings, we can help them reach their full potential and enjoy reading just like anyone else would.
The ABC works by connecting publishers around the world who create accessible versions of existing titles so that they can be shared among libraries serving persons with visual impairments or other print disabilities. Through this collaboration between authors/publishers and library services worldwide, more content will become available in accessible formats than ever before! Additionally, the ABC also provides training programs for librarians so that they know how best serve patrons who require special accommodations when accessing materials from their collections. There are several benefits associated with joining the ABC: firstly you get access to a wide range of resources related to creating accessible book content; secondly you benefit from being part of an international community dedicated towards increasing accessibility; thirdly your organization will receive recognition for its commitment towards promoting equal rights within society; finally you may even qualify for grants provided by various governments aimed at helping those living with physical limitations overcome barriers posed by inaccessible literature!
