Indian Army is the largest land based component of the Indian Armed Forces. Indian government took control of Indian army from the British on 15 Aug, 1947, and so the day is recognized as the establishment day of the Indian Army. Most of the infrastructure of Indian army was inherited from the British Indian Army located in post partition India. The main task of the army is to ensure the national security and defence of the Republic of India from external aggression and threats, and maintaining peace and security within its borders. The Indian army has been involved in many humanitarian rescue operations during natural calamities and other disturbances .Indian army has undertaken numerous peacekeeping missions of the United Nations as well.
